Washington DC is a beautiful place to visit. The monuments and memorials are amazing with a sadness to them that can be overwhelming. The Lincoln Memorial is breathtaking at nighttime and the Vietnam memorial is heartbreaking night or day. Other memorials and monuments are also worth a visit to our nation's capital. Everything is accessible by walking (a lot) or by metro. The Smithsonian museums are a must see plus they are free (yay). We took a night tour which I would highly recommend to learn the history of the city and see the sites without having to walk everywhere. A minimum of three days is required to see most sights but if you want to enjoy your adventure, plan on five days.
Please note that the White House, the Department of State, and the Supreme Court tour requests need to be made at least 3 months in advance. More security background information will be required for the White House, Pentagon, FBI, U.S. Dept. of State and U.S. Dept. of the Treasury tours. Tours will be limited, and even with advanced notice will not be able to guarantee a tour.
